If there was an award for the 'Most Underestimated Position In An Organisation', it would definitely belong to an HR Manager!
The Human Resources Manager is responsible for what makes an organization function - its people, its employees. From figuring out who's the perfect fit for a given profile, chalking out compensation plans, keeping employees happy and engaged, and just making sure that the right kind of talent walks in and more importantly, STAYS - it's all in a day's work for this unassuming hero!
Engrave is proud to be associated with these Knights and Dames in shining armor who ensure that employees are recognized and rewarded for their efforts. To showcase our appreciation, we decided to get up, close and personal with these unsung heroes to let the world better.
And here we are with Mehak Monga, our first HR Hero for the month!
We got chatting with her about her inspirations, challenges she faces, employee engagement and much more.... She was super awesome to answer our questions... Here it goes...
1) What inspired you to become an HR professional?
To be honest, it was my childhood friend who first introduced me to this domain. By nature too, I love interacting with people and understanding different personality types. Being an HR professional allows me to do exactly this, and trust me, I couldn't be happier!
2) Tell us something about the unique HR practices at IIMJobs.
We love to inculcate a 'Fun At Work' element here, at IIMJobs. Keeping that in mind, we organize various events for employees to just interact with each other and participate in activities designed to keep them engaged and motivated. These are usually conducted on Saturdays - that's when they are relaxed enough to make the most of it! Additionally, we arrange monthly meet-ups, to hear the employees' side of the story - what's working for them, what isn't, and how we can help them be better at their jobs. HR needs two-way communication to be effective!
3) What is the ONE Special HR driven initiative implemented at IIMJobs?
The role of an HR professional is not just about hiring the right talent - it's more about making sure the talent stays inside the company. Apart from competitive compensation and a favorable work environment, it's important to focus on the personal ambitions of the employees as well. Keeping this in mind, we came up with Talent Management, to help employees find profiles that match their skillsets. Additionally, we arrange career development sessions to help them grow in the company.
4) Biggest challenge you have faced at work?
The biggest challenge any HR professional faces is to keep employees engaged and to ensure that they STAY. Motivating them to continue contributing to the company's goals is something that needs to be revisited time and again. Additionally, there's always the challenge of staying up to date with applications and tools introduced every passing day, for performance management, appraisals, etc.
5) Word of advice for anyone starting out in HR?
As cliched as it may sound, being good at networking lies at the core of the profession you have chosen. In fact, the art of connecting with people can help you excel at this job, and at life too, in general.
6) Your employee engagement tip for other HR managers?
Every organisation has a personality. In fact, each individual team within an organisation is an entity in itself. What works for one, may not work for another. Make sure you keep this in mind before planning events or activities for each team - it is important to keep ALL the employees engaged, and not just a select chunk of them!
7) One non-HR related hobby you enjoy?
I am a fitness freak! I enjoy spending time at the Gym and doing Aerobics.
That was Mehak Monga for you! She sure is a spirited HR Hero!
